Our Story

Jai Yen's origin poem in the shape of Thailand. Next to the poem is an image of a can of Jai Yen. There's an arrow between the can and the first tea mention in the poem and the words "started here" above the arrow

It started with a poem.

In 2017, our founder, Nathan, traveled up and down Thailand, and he had his first Thai tea. It wasn’t long before he got the idea to add a little bit of alcohol.

When he returned home, he wrote a poem in the shape of Thailand to capture the journey. Each line of the poem corresponds to a memory that he had in that rough geographic region.

After nearly ten years of refining a Hard Thai Tea recipe, he decided to start Jai Yen. When he returned to that poem, he realized Thai tea had been at its center all along. Jai Yen is built on that journey. On memory, place, and the calm in the middle of joyful chaos.

“The evening calm is sweeter than condensed milk billowing in my taramarind-orange tea.”

The Name

What is Jai Yen?

In Thai, Jai Yen means "cool heart," a popular phrase to describe staying cool, calm, and collected. It captures that feeling of the evening calm from our origin poem. It's also a little bit of wordplay. Cha Yen is Thai iced tea. We swapped Cha (tea) for Jai (heart), because we’re a brand with heart.
